Project Title: CENTERPIECE: A New Cultural Beacon in Trondheim
Urban Strategy
Located in a fragmented corner of Trondheim’s urban grid, the project acts as a threshold and attractor, stitching together pedestrian flows between NTNU, Trøndelag Teater, and the historic city center. Its four-sided loggia absorbs movement from all directions and provides shelter year-round, defining a new public square for open-air events and informal gatherings. The building’s quiet monumentality and soft geometry allow it to stand apart as a civic landmark while connecting visually to other cultural institutions in the city.
Reuse Strategy
A key ambition is the adaptive reuse of the existing underground car park to minimize environmental impact. The structure is repurposed to host exhibitions, workshops, and library functions. By removing the intermediate slab, the space is transformed into a generous lower level where exposed concrete is celebrated, and new patios bring natural light into the subterranean volumes.
Materiality
The material palette links earth and sky: a stone-clad portico grounded in local granite supports a softly curved upper volume clad in lightweight perforated metal. This metallic crown echoes the clouds and sky, offering an abstract figure in dialogue with the city’s skyline. Internally, material reuse is prioritized; concrete elements cut from the original slab are repurposed as benches, podiums, and the museum’s grand stair.
Program & Spatial Organization
The museum is vertically organized to allow for adaptive use and efficient operations. The ground floor serves as an inviting civic threshold containing a lobby, café, and bookshop. Above, the program transitions to permanent galleries, an auditorium, and institutional research spaces. The journey culminates at a rooftop terrace featuring a bar and event area, offering citizens expansive views over Trondheim.
