A competition for the design of a mixed use cultural and retail building for Galway?s harbour. The material is stone, a level of quality is associated with stone masonry that ties into the craftmanship and methods similar to those used in corbel structures along the west coast of Ireland and the construction of the original pier. Utilising the inherent strength of stone and its compressive structural qualities. The form is manipulated to allow maximum openings to the water and the diagonal roof forces to be guided to pier level. A monumental form which reacts to, as much as articulates the Galway coastline is created.
