This project, the Center for Design and Democracy, is placed in Union Square Park. Because this park is public open space in New York City, the Center could not remove any park space. The main challenge of this proposal was incorporating all of the programmatic requirements of the Center while designing a habitable roof that could be easily accessible from the rest of the park and provide an alleatory space for visitors. A system of trellises were designed as a way of creating this alleatory condition within the structured environment. The interior of this design is defined by a gradual progression of movement. The floorplates of the structure can be described as a series of bridges, with the topmost level as the thinnest and each level gradually gaining more floor area as the programming becomes more strict and the levels progress downwards.
