CONCEPT OF AQUAPONICS SYSTEM
Aquaponics is an imitation of the natural process which allows the fish and plants to grow in a symbiotic relationship.
Aquaponics is a productive system that combines Aquaculture (fish farming) and Hydroponics (Soil less farming)
This system is a closed loop system in which the fish excretion containing ammonia is converted to nitrites and then nitrates by the nitrogen fixing bacteria which fertilizes plants in Hydroponic system. Then, the water is re-circulated back to the aquaculture system.
Thus excessive concentration in fish tanks ammonia is removed naturally, which acts as nutrients to the plants.
PROJECT JUSTIFICATION
This Aquaponics System process is similar to the saying, “One man's trash is another man's treasure”.
The main advantages of Aquaponics system –
1. Year round food production.
2. No water Contamination
3. Allowance for Ecosystem restoration
4. Almost no use of pesticides, herbicides ,or fertilizers
5. Use of 70-90 % less water
6. Greatly reduces food miles
7. More control of food safety and security
8. Reuse of grey water
9. New employment Opportunities
AIMS
1. RESEARCH & EDUCATION
• Aim of Center for Aquaponics Research & Development is intended to be forward-looking education and research resource, capable of offering solutions to wide variety of the socio-economic and environmental challenges that we face today.
• Plan it as a Center for excellence and life-long learning to demonstrate and highlight the emerging field of Aquaponics technologies. Provide facilities for hands on training and education in Aquaponics and Spirulina technologies.
2. DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM
• An environment to facilitate the creation of relationship of mutual exchange between all Aquaponics enthusiast minds and the communities.
• A catalyst to engage and meeting of mind of farmers, students, researchers, architects, urban designers, potential investors, etc for creating a better world.
3. ENHANCE LIVING
• Enhance the natural environment of the campus and neighbouring areas and increase biodiversity. Produce healthy food and opportunities on every aspect of raising food in whatever situation and with whatever available resources any visitor might have in their own area.
• Promote inclusiveness and participation within the community.
