The background of the competition
The topic of this student competition is Century Monument of Alisan Forestry in Taiwan. The organizer is Chiayi Forest District Office, and the co- organizer is National Chiayi University. The site is in the Alishan National Scenic Area. In the site, there are three existing historical object, statue, skidder, and skidding column. They were remained by pervious forestry development. According to the organizer, the existing objects cannot be moved and covered. In Addition, the official goal is to find the significance of memory of Alisan Forestry and to translate the abstract definition to artistic language. There are three official design intentions, which include showing the value of process and historical significant for the development of Alisan forestry, balancing the ecological preservation and construction, involving the forestry culture, aesthetics, and local artificial scenery.
Design concept
Although the site is located in a natural environment, it actually is a man-made plat plane by removing the trees and cutting the earth. In other words, it is fiercely separated from the environmental, historical, and functional context. Hence, we need to give back what it deserves: retrieving the original appearance of the mountain. This strategy is translated into a continuous skyline sloping up gradually in the section. Thus, the volume is determined.
The coniferous trees are one of them. This dominate species in Alishan becomes a significant role in our study. Since the tree-structure is a forming strategy favored by the domestic and foreign designers, we analysis the conifers branching rules, simplify them, and convert them into a basic geometric form: the diamond. It proves an essential element of the designing process. Applying the structural and constructive strategies to the diamond geometry, we furthermore obtain a conifer-structure unit that consists of a concrete foundation, a steel frame, and wood shutters. We configure the controlling geometric and parametric system that enables the transformation of the modular units, so each element could fit in the site and in the constructive process.
The diamond geometry is carried through to the landscape design, too. According to the height of the base that supports the sculpture, we create a continuous topography for the disabled people. Moreover, the circulation system of the site is considered, and the street benches, which also reflect the idea of the diamond, become parts of the topographical design that define the interface between the parking lots and the walk way. In a word, the geometry integrates the site planning and the architectural design as a whole.
We arrange the configuration of the lighting system, so it looks like the leave veins that imply the curving pattern of the railways. The deeper the lights go into the site, the more the numbers of the branching. Finally, the lights converge together around the sculpture and the post and the machine of the mobile cable systems, which harvested the timbers in the old days. The lightings/railways extend into the site and turn into the conifer structural system, and it infers the connection of the artificial and the natural.
The reason of deserving second shot at glory
The reason we should win the competition is that we integrate the meanings and the forms, organize the design by a logical and dynamical generating system, and try to create a new relationship between the human and the nature. Furthermore, we break away from regular monument impression and redefine the significance of natural and historical Alisan mountain by depicting the geometry of coniferous tree, native symbol and mountain railroad culture. The new monument trusses not only integrate the nature environment but also create the new public space for visitors. The project successfully represents a new prototype memorial and commutation with nature and artificiality. It could be a new landmark and impression in Alishan National Scenic Area.
