a “celestial umbrella” and “digital bar” energize this university’s
student commons networking space the suburban campus for which this design was created is in disparate
need of student networking space. the campus
currently consist of an assortment of former military and industrial
buildings; all of which have been made habitable with minimal available
funds. recently however, a few generous contributions have motivated
the institution to seriously consider its future spacial and aesthetic
needs. this effort has produced a comprehensive master plan centered on
a linear green-space.
this project includes the renovation of an existing administration
building and the addition of a classroom wing, a museum dedicated to the
institution’s founders, and a student commons space overlooking a new
amphitheater and reflecting pool. the student commons space is
conceived as a lounge with space for impromptu group study sessions, a
“digital bar” where students can “plug-in” and “recharge” and private
study “pods” all complete with views of the new green. the main roof
structure acts as a celestial umbrella (complete with an array of
recessed lights) protecting the large expansive of south-west facing
glass from harsh summer sun. we anticipate that the space under this
celestial umbrella will be used as an exterior extension of the student
commons even in inclement weather.
