The Maria José Nogueira Pinto Long-Term Care and Convalescence Unit was designed following a tender for the restoration and conversion of a former factory and office building. Preserving the existing volume, the intervention is intended to be elegant, flexible and functional, allowing for quick alteration of the layout and modules without disturbance to the normal running of the health care unit. The building, comprising five floors above ground level and a basement floor, has capacity for 73 beds. Optimising the building’s high ceilings, large rooms were designed, which are light and airy.
On the exterior, the key concern was to preserve the pre-existing structural characteristics, and the layout was modernised by the creation of a set of slots which create areas of brightness indoors, helping to create an atmosphere of protection and support. The new cladding was selected in line with the general functional requirements of a modern long-term care unit, and complies with the applicable regulations. The UCC-MJNP project was one of the finalists in the Best Intervention With Social Impact category of the National Urban Restoration Prize, and was named the “best real estate development for business and services of the year” at the Portuguese Real Estate Exhibition (SIL) in 2013. This prize was awarded on the basis of the innovative nature and sustainability of the project.
