The Cazenga’s Mediatheque is located in Cazenga, one of the seven municipalities of Luanda, the Capital of Angola. With only 42,6 Km2 and almost 2’000.000 inhabitants, this building will be an important contribution to the local communities and also an upgrade to ReMA’s National Network of Mediatheques, which represent a big step in the improvement of the cultural and educational sectors in the country, providing a cultural, technological and social support to the communities.
The one floor building organizes a different set of spaces that will support the community activities in a sustainable way. The main library with almost 2000m2, an auditorium for nearly 150 persons that stands out for its volumetric presence, the cafeteria and some independent areas that will support classes for the community, are some of the resources that will be available to Cazenga’s community.
The main building is constructed using dark clay clinker bricks and glass facades that create a balanced dialogue in between these two materials as well to provide the thermal protection and natural light into the spaces. Some patios are created to provide protected exterior spaces for kids and also to plant some repellent trees that prevent the existence of mosquitoes in that location, and therefore the prevntion of Malaria.
The landscape strategy, the green roof and walls thermal inertia will provide a significative decrease of energetic consumption of the building that will be a key feature for the maintenance of these public buildings.
The tangent patios are enclosed by a fabric constructed with the same dark clay clinker bricks that will create a dynamic transparency of the vegetation and activities in those spaces.
To embrace the community as much as possible, the site also provides a sport’s facility with dress rooms for two separate teams, and public garden that will have some different areas protected by the shadows of Embondeiros, a local tree that has a iconical presence in the Angolian territory.
