Cavallo Point - the Lodge at the Golden Gate, formerly known as Fort Baker, is a cluster of historic buildings arranged around the 10-acre parade ground. ARG developed the conceptual master plan for the site’s adaptive reuse and served as Architect of Record for the rehabilitation of the historic buildings.
Collaborating with the developer and NPS, ARG designed the programming and adaptive reuse of 18 historic buildings, creating a conference center with meeting rooms, offices, restaurant, bar, and guest accommodations that is a model of preservation and sustainable development. Rehabilitation included architectural upgrades, seismic strengthening, new MEP systems, accessibility upgrades, and exterior restoration.
The project powerfully demonstrates the interrelationship between preservation and sustainable design. It incorporates many sustainable features, from preservation of historic buildings and use of green materials to energy and water-saving systems. The project met the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and achieved a LEED Gold rating.
