3500-square foot redesign and addition project for the offices and edit studios of Cause & [ Effect ] Productions, a television and film production agency in Manhattan, NY. The project began with the addition of 1000 square feet of raw loft space to be connected to two existing separate office spaces. The intent was to foreground Cause & [ Effect ]’s identity, to create an impactful entry sequence for their clients and their staff, and to create an open workplace visually and programmatically linking the different production teams. There was a strong emphasis on salvage and reused building materials, and development of a design that would be reusable and reconfigurable to suit the firm’s future needs. There was a strong emphasis in local sustainability: salvaged materials were sourced locally and we worked with New York-based designers and fabricators to develop custom modular pieces. Natural-pigmented salvaged wood panelling and bench top developed in collaboration with Nightwood, custom desk dividers and data chases crafted from salvage pine lumber offcuts developed in collaboration with Brooklyn Mammal. Working with partners such as Planet Reuse, materials including salvage windows, lumber, reclaimed energy-efficient pendant lighting, and a reclaimed glass reception door were located and incorporated into the project. Re-programming and enhancing the existing offices and studios was another major component of the project. The addition and reconfiguration address the problems of the existing space and tailor the existing and new work environments to suit the needs of each department for privacy, noise levels, and visual sensitivity of the work.
