+ progressiveprinciples
The design intent of Catalpa Apartments was to create a living environment that could redefine one’s understanding of “HUD : Section 8” housing setting a precedent for health care living facilities. Developed by Burrell Behavioral Health Center, Catalpa Apartments functions to house (14) patients transitioning back into the city’s social fabric, (2) managing offices, laundry room, and communal space with a kitchen that will provide care beyond the inhabitants of the facility. Each residential unit is under 540sf and contains a kitchen with dining area, living room, bedroom, and bathroom.
+ modestmodernism
Impacted by constraints, the project subtly morphs out of conventionality and into the realm of high design. Planar masonry masses are woven together with steel, aluminum, and wood to establish emotional relationships by means of raw materials. Form and materiality help the building break away from the flatness of today’s standard construction. Juxtaposed to the area’s weakened sense of materiality the all-heart wood siding almost feels surreal. The building’s formal order and proportions establish a timeless quality to the design. Strict detailing adds another layer of technical control. Interior spaces become sculpted by interlocking volumes that are pragmatically controlled. A balance of vibrant and earthen color helps to further express the volumetric play of spaces in light.
+ pivotalplan
Balancing efficiency and effectiveness, the “L” shape plan establishes a circulation pattern that pivots around the social spaces of the facility. A heightened sense of peace and tranquility is absorbed from the central ‘Zen garden.’ The two primary axis’ eliminate the mundane “double-loaded corridor” while providing visual relationships to the surrounding context. Upon entering a residential unit, an expansive spatial sense is created by a diagonal line of vision all the way through the bedroom which is enhanced by an abundance of natural light and large openings. The spatial comfort extends to the exterior via patios contained by railings that comfort the haptic sense.
+ environmentaletiquette
The design integrates environmental ethics in the name of righteous design, not presupposed notoriety. A large glass wall with wood sun louvers opens to the south capitalizing on solar heat gain while overlooking the ‘Zen garden.’ Low-maintenance, local vegetation were used minimize maintenance and integrate the vernacular of its site. Operable windows and doors persuade inhabitants to let nature in while utilizing cross ventilation and natural lighting. Wood construction and long-lasting, local materials reduce the buildings carbon footprint. Heat pumps, ‘Energy Star’ appliances, and low-e glass increase the building performance.
