Created to inspire and build community and pride of place, Casitas de Colores is a distinct assembly of apartments located within an emerging downtown community of Albuquerque, N.M. With 85% affordable units, this mixed-income housing is in close proximity to the ABQ BioPark, Alvarado Transportation Center, restaurants, theaters, and family services, making its location ideal.
The colorful low-rise, two- and three-bedroom apartment buildings are situated on the street edge and are configured to create an interior courtyard. Apartment units with balconies overlooking the street becomes the edge from public to community, while a gated interior courtyard defines the resident community areas where play structures, barbeque grills, and outdoor seating promote community interaction. With circulation at the perimeter of the courtyard, the visibility of apartment front doors supports safety and light wells impose distance between the apartment and the main circulation to reinforce privacy.
Daylight, visibility, and views are maximized in each unit with windows located on the courtyard edge and balconies on the street edge, providing connectedness with the community and street activity. Considering the needs of the family, social services, an education room, a demonstration kitchen, laundry facilities, and fitness center are all on site. Designed to maximize use of the site for livable and community space, sustainable aspects were incorporated into typically underutilized areas. Rooftop photovoltaic arrays help lower resident utility bills, while underground cisterns store rainfall for irrigation. Casitas achieved LEED Platinum and Gold certifications.
By creating an intentional sense of place, Casitas has established an identity for urban affordable housing. It is part of the greater developing density of downtown and is distinguished only by its vibrant colors. Casitas de Colores serves an important demographic in the community and promotes well-being, community, and pride.
