Currently under construction, the form of this private residence emerges from a confluence of personal and environmental, physical and psychological elements. Featuring a full southern exposure to the sun, the site provides spectacular, unobstructed views in every direction. The visual panorama of ocean, agricultural land, and nearby as well as distant human settlements allows the capture of specific vistas from each area of the dwelling.
The major terrace runs full along the south elevation, engaging a natural context of birdsong and surf. Close proximity to heather fields, together with the presence of waving seashore grasses, bright poppies, and the flight of arboreal wildlife, creates an embrace of living rhythm. As day cycles to night, north and western views come alive with lights twinkling in the distance. Sand and natural grasses indigenous to the site are maintained. Propagated landscape is limited to a raised planter and enclosed garden patio area on the north side of the house. Adjacent to the reflection pond and entryway, the shielded patio gives protection from the prevailing sea breeze and offers seclusion for relaxation. A built-in bar-b-que serves a small grass lawn for outdoor dining.
The curvilinear grammar of the plan derives from a philosophical affinity of the clients, expressed to the architect in their memories of childhood and special vacation spots. Living room and conclave share a suspended fireplace, set in a series of translucent acrylic tubes surrounded by a small water element. This feature can be enjoyed with views of surrounding landscapes through floor to ceiling glazing, which is operable to admit the sights and environmental sensations of the coastline. The combination of fire, water, and sky appeals to the inner life of the client.
The circular work area in the kitchen was brought to the architect as a preference. The arc of the kitchen allows views of the ocean, entry, and driveway, and opens for easy access to the breakfast terrace and enclosed patio. The kitchen, nook, conclave, and living room share the presence of the suspended hearth, which sends the sounds and smells of burning wood throughout the house for snugness against coastal fogs. Built-in seating in the master bedroom and living room foster reading and the enjoyment of music. Reached by a spiral staircase, a second-story crow’s nest responds to the romantic imagination of the the clients. Placed within the many beauties of the site and focused upon the aspirations of the clients, the design of this house joins outer stimulation with inner revelation to provide an intimate experience of residence.
