minimalist box a narrow lot measuring 50’ wide and 500’ long starts west at the street perpendicular to a dead end road. facing a nature preserve the lot extends east to the edge of a river. the terrain is rich with coniferous trees to the north and deciduous to the south. the intent was to preserve the majority of the landscape and also conform to the rigorous restriction demanded by the dnr and the city. the existing grade was below the flood plain next to a flood way and needed to be elevated a minimum of 4’. setbacks of 15’ to the sides 25’ on the front and a maximum of 117’ of buildable distance from the street made the lot difficult and undesirable to prospective buyers but presented an interesting vision to the designer looking for a creative modern form in the landscape. this contributed to a resolution in a minimalist 20’ wide and 56’ long rectangle plan. this dwelling sits on a concrete block structure housing a tandem two car garage and utility room. the light wood structure
