The design brief called for a reconfiguration of this apartment to evoke feelings of the Italian landscapes of the clients’ childhood. A bright and carefully limited palette stresses natural textures and light with a new digitally crafted timber stair and roof terrace with stunning views over the city. In line with 51 architecture’s sustainable ethos, the inherently decorative ash timber used for stairs and flooring is hewn from local tree crowns felled by strong winds.
Built using a combination of boatbuilding techniques and digital fabrication methods, the design team worked closely with engineer Tim Lucas at Price and Myers and Tripledot’s site carpenters to create a stair with no structural steel or visible fixings.
