With the belief that every project and location has its own unique spirit, BAD – Başak Akkoyunlu Design creates functional yet aesthetically refined and inspiring spaces. One of their latest projects, Casa Solis, is a striking summer house located in Çeşme, known for its modern and elegant design.
Designed by architect Başak Akkoyunlu and her team at BAD as a summer retreat, Casa Solis is situated on a 1033 sqm plot, capturing the scenic views of its western and southern surroundings. The residence is composed of two distinct volumes, easily recognizable from the façade, each serving different functional purposes. One houses single-story living spaces, the kitchen, and bathrooms, while the other contains three-story bedroom units. These two volumes, separated according to spatial functions, are also differentiated through the use of façade materials.
The western and southern-facing areas comprise a spacious kitchen with a pantry and a high-ceilinged living room with a fireplace. On the southern façade, a recessed form corresponds to the kitchen area inside, creating a more comfortable outdoor seating area protected from the northern and western winds. This setback also works with the other projecting volume, which houses the living room, to create a shaded terrace area that offers protection from the strong western sun despite the wide eaves.
The 75 sqm terrace features an outdoor kitchen counter, with a garden storage room and shower area located just behind the kitchen. On the eastern side of the house, a wide eave supported by a circular column, designed to frame the sunset and inspire the home’s name, adds a dramatic architectural feature to the villa.
An infinity pool is located on the lower level of Casa Solis. It is clad in the same material as the terrace, with steps descending into the pool, helping the whole area feel visually and spatially unified. Access to the garden is possible via the garage or pedestrian gates. Garden walls, constructed from exposed concrete, are kept at 50 cm above ground level to preserve views, and finished with transparent railings. On the eastern side, where the street is lower, the walls rise to 110 cm in height. A pathway paved in natural stone leads to the terrace in front of the kitchen and living areas. In the northwest corner of the garden, a fixed seating area also accessible directly from the parking space serves as a secondary living space.
The entrance to the interior of Casa Solis is located beneath a deep eave with an iroko wood ceiling, which also clads the main entrance door. This entrance leads into a hallway that separates the living areas from the bedrooms. Upon entering, visitors are welcomed by an opening that frames a picturesque view of Chios Island. To the left of the hallway is a living room with a 4.2 meter-high ceiling, containing a dining area in front of floor-to-ceiling windows and a spacious seating zone. To the right are the master bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, all oriented toward the view and with direct access to outdoor areas. For privacy, louvered panels are used in service areas on the eastern façade, which still allow light and air in.
A staircase in the bedroom volume leads to the basement, which houses technical rooms, storage, and spaces designed with light wells and ventilation. This level includes a laundry room connected to a laundry chute from the upper floors and a maid’s room with an en-suite bathroom.
Material choices at Casa Solis include textured plaster and natural stone for the exterior, while the interiors feature light-toned parquet and uniform beige ceramic tiles. On the façades of the living room, kitchen, and stair volumes, honed and unfilled light-toned crosscut travertine specially selected from Denizli was used. These travertine panels, cut to custom sizes, are combined with bush-hammered basalt to add aesthetic richness to the living areas. A specially chosen gray marble, used in the fireplace and entryway flooring, harmonizes with the travertine surfaces to create a cohesive material palette.
