Between Toluca’s cool air and family gatherings, Casa Santa Ana finds harmony in space, sunlight, and energy-efficient design.
As a retirement home, Casa Santa Ana responds to a very clear brief: a single level house with accessibility and space for an extended family to gather frequently and often.
The project was built on a large plot of land which allowed for a generous floor plan but also presented a challenge: to solve an extensive programme with multiple public, private and service areas and to accommodate many cars.
From the start the layout was conditioned by Toluca’s climate (cold and dry) where south facing orientation is key to getting light and heat. But the terrain required an east west orientation which made it difficult to get direct sunlight. In this context the strategy was to divide the volume into three main bodies connected by voids (courtyards) of different nature: a first courtyard that divides the public and private areas, a second more contained void that articulates the service spaces and a third more intimate void that brings light and ventilation to the main rooms.
The heart of the project is a structure that simulates a second level but is actually a double height sloping space that allows maximum sunlight. This space is in the private area and is designed to collect solar radiation throughout the day thanks to windows up to 5 meters wide. This way the rooms in constant use don’t need mechanical systems.
The rooms less favored by the orientation, like the service room and one of the north facing bedrooms, are compensated with domes to get heat gain without compromising privacy. In general the volumes were arranged to not cast shadows on each other and when that was not possible side openings were used to get constant natural light. The house has three main bedrooms each with its own bathroom. The social areas are on the ground floor: a double height living-dining room that visually connects to a TV room on the upper floor, a semi open kitchen with wine cellar, office and half bathroom and a reading area that takes advantage of the light from the main corridor.
Casa Santa Ana is a project that combines residential scale and social spaces responding to a specific programme. Its value is in the way climate, orientation and architectural form are integrated to get a warm and lasting space.
