Located in the serene landscape of Nicoya, Guanacaste, within the Hacienda Don Carlos, Casa Sanabria is a compact yet thoughtful timber home that embodies the principles of sustainable design. Spanning 160m², this linear structure is carefully positioned at the edge of expansive grasslands and a steeply sloped protected forest, harmonizing with its natural surroundings.
The house faces north, offering uninterrupted views of the Nicoya Valley and Cerro Caballito. This orientation not only frames the stunning landscape but also minimizes solar heat gains in Guanacaste’s warm climate. The single-sloped roof, opening northward, enhances natural ventilation and helps maintain a comfortable interior environment without the need for extensive mechanical cooling.
Respecting the pre-existing conditions of the site, Casa Sanabria is perched on an artificial plateau of cracked stone, which was present before the project began. This design decision avoided further disturbance to the landscape, reflecting a commitment to environmental preservation. The lightweight structure sits delicately on mini-piles, ensuring the untouched subsoil remains intact.
The entire house, including its structure, partitions, and envelope, is built from locally sourced solid timber harvested from certified plantations within the Hacienda Don Carlos estate. This not only reduces the carbon footprint of transportation but also promotes sustainable forestry practices.
The home’s interior is designed to maximize its connection to nature. Carefully placed openings frame the surrounding landscape, allowing natural light to flow in while providing shading to ensure comfort. Each space is designed to feel open, airy, and intrinsically connected to the environment, creating a living experience that is both protective and immersive.
Casa Sanabria reflects a balanced approach to modern living in a rural context, prioritizing sustainability, minimal environmental impact, and a profound connection to the natural beauty of Guanacaste. It is a house that honors its surroundings while providing a comfortable and efficient living space for its inhabitants.
