Casa Nova is a modern residence that is located within an olive grove in Messinian Mani, Greece with a south-west view towards the Messinian coast and a northwest view towards the mountain base of Taygetus. The combined nature of the view of both mountain and sea, as well as the mild slope of the landscape drove the design into an above ground residence arranged in a linear axis.
On the south-west edge of the axis the pool and its surrounding outdoor spaces are placed, whereas on the north-east edge of the axis there is the outdoor terrace of the master bedroom. The distinct roof, which is inclined and parallel to the ground, is supported by the metal and stone features of the building.
The residence’s outline follows a uniform rectangular shape and is expanded in two levels. The majority of the ground floor acts as a solid, underground base hosting the guest bedrooms. The top level is exposed to the view with large openings throughout the perimeter and a metal structure that holds the inclined roof. The metal frame follows the linear nature of the residence and extends outwards to form external shaded spaces allowing the outdoor and indoor spaces to blend.
The uniform stone wall on the north-east side of the residence, towards mount Taygetus, outlines the view towards the mountain and shapes the entrance garden. In parallel relation and in close proximity, a second stone wall is extended in continuation with the living room, shaping an outdoor sitting and dining area. Above the stone wall, linear windows are placed, providing a visual connection with the mountain from the spaces of the top floor.
The building is oriented towards the south-east to provide the necessary shading during afternoon hours. Across the main elevation of the top floor, wooden shades are placed and held on metal frames that can be adjusted according to sun conditions, simultaneously changing the building’s elevation.
The garden in continuation with the existing olive grove, combines the local flora with tropical plants such as banana trees that thrive in the existing landscape. In the surrounding area of the residence, a small chapel has been conserved and clad with the local stonework. A small organic path offers a serene promenade through the garden and olive grove, connecting the different external functional spaces of the house and leading towards the parking of the entrance.
