This holiday home in “Quinta das Salinas”, is a house renovation, begun in March 2015 and completed in early 2016, located in a residential neighbourhood in the south of Portugal.
The design incorporates the addition of an upper floor level, made up of Master Bedroom, Ensuite, and Study area, to an existing bungalow done in a typical (80s holiday) pseudo-vernacular style. The parti has transformed an inward looking cellular house to a modern open concept design, interlacing interior and exterior spaces horizontally and vertically. Its main goal was to strengthen the relationship of the interior living spaces with the garden, and ocean beyond.
The existing exterior stair which led to the original roof, now becomes an interior stair gaining access to the new Master Bedroom/Ensuite/Study. The floor area has been increased from a bungalow of 150 m2 to a two storey home of 253 m2 (185 m2 ground floor and 68 m2 upper floor); due to the expansion of the Living/Dining Room/Kitchen, as well as the entire new second floor master bedroom area.
Spectacular views toward the “Ria Formosa” National Park and the ocean beyond were opened up by taking down existing partition walls to expose the Kitchen/Breakfast area to the Living/Dining Rooms, as well as expanding these toward the Pool/Garden area. This expansion becomes a covered terrace for the Master Bedroom, which serves as access to a new stepped “Leisure Zone” and a roof terrace with a panoramic view of the ocean and a nearby lagoon. The Leisure Zone can be characterized as an amphitheatre, with two stepped terraces following the slope of the original roof. This newly created open air space is framed by the new covered terrace.
The covered terrace becomes the primary focal point between inside and outside, effectively becoming the “heart” of the house.
