La Floresta de Sant Cugat is a garden city surrounded by the Collserola Natural Park, which borders to the north with the city of Barcelona. The project is located on one of the edges of the urbanized area, acting as a boundary between it and the forest zone. It can be accessed via two roads on either side of the plot, both ending at its limits in cul-de-sacs. Therefore, the house will, in the future, be permanently surrounded by the Natural Park, giving it a particularly privileged situation.
The wide, steep plot features a roof at the level of the upper road, designed as a large planter that incorporates the spontaneous vegetation of the park itself, like an extension of it. It’s a respectful and sensitive proposal, like a revelation of the place, with an architecture understood as a continuation of the landscape itself, dissolved in nature, silent, almost non-existent. The house is not visible from the upper street; it disappears. The recognition of its parts is meant to be subtle, revealed gradually, making the experience of approaching it unique and intense at every moment. The entrance ritual hints at what might unfold. Every corner is meticulously designed to evoke emotion. The materials are chosen for their expressive potential and their ability to transform with light, engaging all our senses.
The access courtyard, which houses the central concrete staircase, connects all floors and is filled with vegetation hanging from the roof and intermediate planters, filtering the light. Two main materials are used: concrete, with a tone achieved through aggregates from the plot itself and a texture specifically designed for this project, combined with oak for the interior finishes. Oak, with its warmth, offers a gentle contrast and softens the coolness that concrete might evoke.
Time becomes a material in the project. The choice of these materials is rooted in their ability to beautify as they age. The result is an intimate habitat, a personal space where the experience is both intense and memorable.
As for the interior layout, the most private areas of the house are located on the upper floor, while the intermediate floor houses the daytime area, open and transparent to the landscape. The setting is exceptional, and despite the large openings, it allows for intimacy in every space, with the constant presence of the surrounding forest. The lower, semi-buried floor contains leisure spaces, bordered by slate rock walls from the area and concrete, subtly illuminated by a large opening in the pool.
The boundaries between interior and exterior are blurred through the sense of transparency from the large glass panels and the way the exterior vegetation invades the interior spaces. However, this is a unique and genuine project, just a few minutes from the center of Barcelona, where beauty and a sense of well-being, in intimate contact with nature, are its main values.
