A dwelling for an artist and her family. The site is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north and Ciénaga Los Manatíes, a swamp, to the east. The design works with the concept of transition from solid to open, having the most solid elements at the entrance of the property where the most privacy is needed, and the most transparent faces on the back of the house, where the openness is desired. The design offers moments for optimal living experiences in a coastal area, creating a series of indoor and outdoor rooms.
The volume of the building is fragmented into smaller volumes and levels to provide the best configuration for views, to maximize the relationship between inside and outside, and to allow for a programmatic differentiation that generates spaces with different characteristics. The program is divided into live and work, the north volumes contain the live areas, while the south volumes the contain the work areas, these two components are connected by a courtyard.
The design establishes a powerful; yet delicate balance between earth and sky, water and garden - engaging views of its distant dramatic context while its interior is comforting with earnest textures and sincere architecture. Sustainable strategies are used throughout the house to provide a high level of comfort, these include the use of large overhangs and screens for shade and natural lighting, natural cross ventilation, xeriscaping and preservation of existing native plants.
