The existing house is located in Ñuñoa, in Santiago de Chile and has a constructed area of 159 m2. It is attached on the first floor by one of its sides, and spaced both in the second; Its west facade faces a large green courtyard without building any relation; existing housing refuses the garden.
The extension program corresponds to a new bedroom with bathroom and walk in closet; barbacue area, terraces, extension of kitchen and storage area, laundry, new bathrooms, cinema room and a private office of daily use, extension that considering its circulations, would increase the area of the initial housing in 129 m2. As design requirements, it was requested to control lighting in the interior, maintenance of the organization of existing floors, preservation of the dimensions of the courtyard and the scale and image of the house towards the street; So the extension was discarded to a third level.
The project seeks to build a new relationship and a constant invitation to the garden, for which it was proposed to raise and submerge private programs in order to clear the level in direct relation with the courtyard, transforming the old limit into a space with its own duration.
On the first floor, interior vains were opened, the west wall was glazed to free the view and longitudinally through the dwelling; Relating the new and the existing through a constant tension between interior and exterior.
The kitchen and storage area were expanded, incorporating a daily dining room in direct and continuous relation with the service area, which was expanded creating a new south facing. In this level was located the stairs of access to the underground level that articulates the relation between the terrace and barbacue area and determines the measurement of the new outer space of transition; In its progress this stairway distance this new level of the foundations of the existing house, making structural and programmatic independent the buried level.
At the buried level was a courtyard of light perimeter glazed, which separates, illuminates and ventilates the office, facing the afternoon light and the cinema room, space that turns its back in the light of the west. The slab was raised as a vegetative cover to preserve the green patio surface.
The expanded volume on the second floor corresponds to the master bedroom, located on this level just like the rest of the bedrooms in the place that overlooks the green landscape. Access to this space is through the old office that now corresponds to the walk in closet of the room.
Its supporting structure models a virtual volume, creating a protected bonding space between the interior of the house and the large garden.
