La Casa en el Bosque, by Gabriel Rivera Arquitectos, is nestled among a forest of acacia and eucalyptus trees, adapting to the terrain’s topography and honoring the surrounding nature. From the outset, the architecture team aimed to design a home that not only fulfilled the practical needs of a young family with two small children but also stimulated the senses and the mind, becoming an inspiring space.
Located in the Monteserrín sector of Quito, the house sits on a lot with a double negative slope. A detailed topographic study was carried out to integrate the project efficiently, minimizing land movement and preserving the natural elements. The result is a fluid incorporation that aligns with the original terrain.
Nature was clearly the foundation for the design. Every existing natural element was preserved, resulting in architecture that harmonizes with its environment. The surrounding forest—home to birds and wildlife—embraces the structure, shielding it from strong valley winds. Inside, architectural elements inspired by the organic forms of the forest provide smooth, flowing spaces.
Visitors are welcomed by a winding stone wall and two acacia trees piercing through the overhang. Opening the door reveals a lush garden and, beyond it, the home itself. Natural-level stairways lead down to the main entrance. On the ground floor are the social areas—double-height living-dining room and kitchen—which seamlessly connect to the covered porch, garden, and forest.Upstairs are the private areas, with bedrooms that offer panoramic views of the woods and valley, and two versatile rooms connected to the open space below via sliding doors—ideal for work, exercise, or rest. The third floor houses services and parking. Light, flow, spatial relationships, and comfort were all central to the design.
