The new house is located at the foot of the Lombarda hill in northern Italy. The L- shaped layout of the inner court was chosen for its proper balance between a generous opening onto the countryside landscape and a partial closure of the area dedicated to the entrance and the swimming pool, giving these spaces, which are raised above the road, more privacy.
The design mix between openness and protection elements was used for the choice of the important overhang of eaves which cover the entire building, and at the same time the large glass windows: these two elements justify each other allowing perfect sun exposure (major protection in the summer months and completely exposed in the winter months). The large intermediate floor thus functions as protection for the ground floor and simultaneously as a terrace for the first floor. The projection close to the living area becomes more extended to create a true porch, placed in an intermediate position between the inside of the house and the pool area.
The elementary design is reinforced by the use of a limited number of materials which have both ecological and technically efficient characteristics : the gutters are covered with elements made of wood fibre, the sleeping area is completely covered with local natural stone, providing a sharp contrast with the white plaster of the living area and at the same time maximizing the acoustic insulation of the interiors. The raised exterior floor integrates in both design and materials with the external walls and the pool. The majority of the windows are from floor to ceiling; the opening ones having a thicker profile.
The house is the result of an unexpectedly complex research project of a simple architectural design. The search for a formal simplicity that allows the perception of the primitive aspects of the architectural construction: protection and contemplation, the dynamic perspectives, the paths, the proportions, the essential building components.
