Facing Parque D. Maria II, in Santo Tirso, a restoration project was born that transformed a traditional house dating from 1912 into a dwelling that stands out for its modern language while seeking to keep alive the history and the magical atmosphere of its surroundings, warming the lives of its inhabitants. Thus, there was a concern to preserve as many of the house’s existing features and elements as possible, turning it into a harmonious intersection between past and present.
It is a residence with five bedrooms, an office-library, entrance hall, common room, living room, and kitchen. Outside, there is a marble-clad swimming pool with a garden area and a multifunctional room that includes a games area and garage, a bathing space, and another technical support area for the house and pool.
The aim is for the dwelling to ensure, fundamentally, communication between the interior and exterior spaces, so that there is both the necessary natural light and a visual connection with the surrounding land and the garden area of Parque D. Maria II.
“The project consisted of the complete restoration of all the house’s elements. We preserved the structure, the partitions, the main façade with its crafted wooden frames, and we crossed all this historical space with an architecture of iron, glass, and concrete, which makes the rear façade an architectural element of contrast. The house is made of contrasts. Different times converse. Past and present stand together in respect for calm lines.”
"We acquired the house in 2012. It was a laboratory for experiments. Me, as an architect, and my wife, as an engineer, found it the perfect place to freely explore all our principles and concepts."
