The project consists of remodeling a house that the architects designed several years ago for a different client. The original plan was intended for a single person who needed only one room. However, the new phase of the project will remodel the house for a couple with an expanding family. According to these new requirements, the design was completed with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a TV room. The new design considers only the second floor.
Analyzing the original diagram of the house the architects looked for voids that permit an extension with a minimal effect on the original structure. Accordingly, we proposed a new volume that has a strong contrast with the original and immediate context.
The new geometry was designed in favor of the diagonal. To accent the irregularity of the polygonal we played with the subtraction of elements from the base to the lines that draw the façade. This modification resulted in generating windows and dividing the façade into several surfaces with distinct orientations. Such distinct orientations also create a play of reflections on the enameled sheet that covers the façade.
In some areas, the differences between the extension and the original state of the house were carefully graduated, allowing a soft transition from one phase to the next. Conversely, in other areas we marked the new contrasts strongly, producing a dramatic yet appealing transformation.
