Casa Blanc is a tiered townhouse on the Upper East Side that underwent a significant renovation which included the addition of several unique garden spaces, including terraces off of each bedroom, a dining area, a front garden, and the rooftop. VERDANT worked closely with the client—who had a keen aesthetic and interest in the process— and their architect to ensure that the exterior and interior renovations were cohesive and thoughtful. Our design emphasized a simplified material palette throughout, puntuated by distinctive planting aesthetics for each individual space. Moving through the rooms of the townhouse, one’s eye is drawn to the echoes of green replicated in different forms, densities, and tones.
Every exterior space had different light conditions which gave us the opportunity to design with a broad palette of plants. The rooftop is a collection of native trees, framed by meadow-like planting. In the summer, it is lush and dense, with movement and pops of color. The rear garden is in full shade. Tall bamboo, japanese maples and shade-loving perennials were selected here. Other terraces feature custom concrete planters, specimen trees, and a gesture of green which appears to grow right out of the wood decking.
