Home life and family life. Living in a family is an attempt to coexist between the personal worlds of each of its members.
Each house is a system where interests, passions, individual and collective hobbies coexist. Many times chaotic and other times in a delicate balance of moments, times and synchronies.
The house hopes - or at least wishes - to enable such coexistence, so as to be inclusive without becoming invasive and able to summon without overstepping the bounds of those who share this coexistence.
This house is located in Papudo, on the coast of the Valparaiso Region, in Chile. The site is located on a hill south west of the coastal edge and about 30 meters above sea level. Given its geographical coordinates (-32.50 lat; -71.45 long) and its proximity to the sea, the local climate is warm and temperate, with stable temperatures and high ambient moisture content. The rains are concentrated in winter, when the north wind blows. The site has an area of 700 m2, an average slope of 8% and is shaded by 7 eucalypti located to the east of the site.
The architecture of this house was conceived upon the idea of coexistence between individualities whose interaction can produce new relations and experiences. Corners, stands, terraces, balconies. Spaces for chance, for formal meeting and improvised conversations.
The qualities of each space are given by the kind of encounter and its relationship with the environment. Thus, the first project decision consists in organizing the house alternating the interior spaces for collective use with the intermediate and exterior spaces that interact with the near and far environment. The living room stretches over the site to the north terrace, the dining room extends over the balcony to the front garden, the reading room turns to the south hills and articulates the ascent to the upper sea-facing viewpoint.
The second decision brings together the collective spaces without divisions between them, as to allow different activities simultaneously, together but not scrambled.
The lower and upper level house the common use: dining room, kitchen and gazebo, while the intermediate level receives the private spaces, connecting them through balconies and terraces to the treetops.
The house rises on two levels and a lookout deck. The enclosure is watertight and is made from pine wood partitions, thermal insulation, pine wainscoting on the inside and black fibre cement tiles on the outside. Its north orientation captures the solar path during the day in winter and the covered terraces shade the crystals avoiding overheating in summer. The arrangement of the openings favors the entry of the sea breeze by ventilating and eliminating excess humidity, while safeguarding air quality and thermal well-being in summer.
