When designer Betsy Vohs wanted to create a place for restoration she didn’t head to the northern lake country of her home state of MN. Living and working in Minneapolis, it's common practice to have a cabin. The retreat on the lake where one escapes their day to day lives. For Betsy that held no appeal. Having gone to college in the desert southwest she fell in love with the desert and wanted a retreat that was focused on restoration and offered a major scene change from Minnesota. Having vacationed for many years in the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs was a natural fit. The Mid Century architecture, great dining and shopping and views of the desert mountains made it the perfect spot.
The designer found a great mid-century home that was ready for a transformation. The location is close to downtown Palm Springs in the charming neighborhood of Movie Colony. This neighborhood was the landing spot for many of Hollywood’s golden age stars, like Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope, and home to architects like Donald Wexler.
The home sits softly on the site. So quiet you experience it from the inside but outside in the landscape it melts away, letting the landscape become the star. The home was previously owned by landscape architects that made some beautiful selections for the yard. Vohs put her own touch on the yard by adding art, seating areas, renovating the pool, new plantings and an outdoor kitchen.
Living outside is more important than the interior of the home in the desert. The living spaces that anchor the front and back yard become areas for dining and relaxation while immersing oneself in the garden. Not to say interiors are unimportant! Vohs redesigned the interior to focus on adding bright finishes and classic modern elements to the home. She touched every room and has transformed the home into a contemporary retreat for her and her guests.
She is focused on the sustainability of the home as well, adding new appliances, plumbing fixtures, pool systems, solar panels and a full battery backup for the home. The residence is off the grid using the power created by day to support the home at night. It was important for Vohs to create a more sustainable home while living in the desert.
The home’s furniture and art are all unique to Vohs’ style. She curates each space with custom pieces and elements that reflect her personal style and the vibe of a home in the desert.
