Casa 499C is located in Centro Merida. The project aimed to create a spacious and airy home that is situated on a very narrow lot.The original structure was in extremely poor condition and only the front room with its "mamposteria" walls and high beamed ceilings were retained. As with most properties in Centro Merida, built wall to wall with neighbors, the challenge is always to bring airflow and light through. To do this, the house was broken into interior / exterior / interior / exterior spaces. The front part of the house and the rear bedroom are separated by the ubiquitous pool-- a unspoken requirement for homes in Merida due to the Yucatan heat. The front bedroom can be opened up to become a loft space, allowing for a sense of spaciousness in an otherwise small home. The result is a comfortable home that feels bigger than its narrow 5 meter width.
