The Caruby Nursery and Children’s Leisure Centre in Gassin is conceived as an architecture of care, rooted in the Mediterranean landscape and attentive to the rhythms of early childhood. Located on a gently sloping hillside, the project engages the existing topography, vegetation, and light as fundamental design materials, rather than constraints to be overcome.
Rather than imposing a singular object, the building unfolds as a series of low, mineral volumes that follow the land. Stone walls anchor the project to its context, echoing the vernacular architecture of the Var, while timber elements and shaded outdoor spaces soften the ensemble and offer tactile, sensory experiences for children. Architecture here does not dominate; it accompanies.
The project accommodates a nursery for 30 children and a children’s leisure centre (ALSH) for 80 children, alongside shared spaces and outdoor pedagogical areas. Interior spaces are conceived at a child’s scale, prioritizing natural light, visual continuity with the landscape, and fluid transitions between inside and outside. Large openings frame the surrounding orchards and sky, allowing daylight to structure daily activities and seasonal rhythms.
Outdoor spaces are integral to the architectural composition. Gardens, patios, and shaded play areas extend learning beyond enclosed rooms, fostering autonomy, curiosity, and calm. The building becomes a protective threshold between the intimacy of early life and the wider landscape, offering shelter without enclosure.
Sustainability is approached through common sense and permanence rather than spectacle. Compact volumes, durable materials, passive climatic strategies, and a close relationship to the ground ensure longevity and adaptability over time. The project seeks to endure, both physically and emotionally, as a place of memory for its youngest users.
In Gassin, the Caruby project proposes an architecture that listens before it speaks — one that respects what is already there and gently extends it, offering children a first experience of space shaped by care, light, and landscape.
