This is a great small Spanish-style home in the Carthay Square historic overlay zone of Central Los Angeles.
Alan and Vicky wanted us to design an outdoor space in their backyard that would be ideal for entertaining.
Our biggest challenges included the dramatic elevation change between the backyard and the main house, a very small space in which to design for a variety of functions, and overall creating a design that is fun yet sensitive to the original architecture.
To create a flow from the indoors to the outdoors, we designed a raised patio to be at the same level of the main house and later step down at the lawn. Despite the limited space, we were able to incorporate all of the client’s wish list items including a barbecue area, a fireplace, a water feature and a pergola that allows for enjoyment of the outdoors in any weather.
