Reviving and renovating an old carriage house from the early 1900s to buipd off original features like a central hayloft. We expanded this central space to create a double height hearth of the home and fill the new great room with northern light. The home suffered from incongruous renovations in the 1980s and earlier. We took advantage of historical loft spaces to make them features and enhance the carriage-house character of old. However, recognizing the needs of a young busy family, we modernized and doubled the size of a new eat-in cook's kitchen with an oversized island for homework , conversation and meals. We upgraded windows for greater energy efficiency including at the antique cupola.
