CONCEPT & INTENT
More than a utilitarian shelter, this carport functions as a transitional space—a protected threshold between the cultivated and the wild. Designed with restraint and material clarity, the structure reflects a belief that even the most modest buildings can express care, intention, and craft.
DESIGN STRATEGY
Filtered Light & Framed Views: Translucent polycarbonate clads the end gables, casting diffused natural light into the space by day and transforming the structure into a soft-glowing lantern by night.
Material Depth: The exterior is clad primarily in shou sugi ban cedar siding, lending the structure a rich, tactile surface that weathers beautifully while resisting the elements. Its dark finish adds quiet drama and anchors the form in the landscape.
Enclosure as Gesture: Two large sliding barn doors—one on either side—transform the carport from an open passage to a fully enclosed volume, offering security, shelter, and sculptural presence.
Celebrated Structure: The exposed framing is left honest and legible, showcasing rhythm, proportion, and the expressive quality of timber construction. Light filtering through the polycarbonate highlights the geometry within.
