The overarching intention within the project was to execute a design that embodies regenerative, interconnected principles in a single-family zero energy retrofit and renovation. We want to demonstrate the result of collaborating with the planet results in a building that is beautiful, healthy, resilient, and positively impacts the environment and the occupants.
We have taken a historically significant, single-family home, lived in by ordinary people and made it net zero energy with the use of healthy, low embodied energy materials; targeting zero waste; and affordability. We prioritized a closed-loop process of design and construction methodologies, through salvaging and reuse of materials, on-site composting, and life cycle consideration of the building as a whole.
The project is also a demonstration of how to integrate the landscape with planted shading devices, water capture, food accessibility, and habitat restoration. We highlight the importance of fostering a connection to Nature that inspires one to support Nature, respect natural processes, and immerse completely in the diverse abundance and life cycle of Nature.
This project is a successful example of how individuals can improve, if not eliminate, their home's footprint on the Earth and help mitigate the downward spiral of climate change that is in large proportion due to building operations and embodied carbon of materials in those buildings.
This project proves we can live lightly on the Earth, with a zero impact energy footprint, low impact water consumption, low embodied carbon in material selection, the regeneration of habitat and food sources, and community outreach and do so beautifully, affordably, and comfortably.
