Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Library

12095, World Trade Drive, San Diego, CA, United States

YEAR
1997
The concept for this library is that of a “pavilion in a garden.” All public spaces within the library open onto a passive enclosed courtyard, which encourages patrons to utilize protected outdoor reading areas. Over 50% of the building’s windows are operable and doors to the garden are abundant. The connection with the natural environment is intentional and real. A thoughtful landscape plan places numerous trees throughout the site, with the intention of softening the harsh summer sun and enhancing the psychological effect of natural ventilation. The Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Library received an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects—San Diego Chapter in June of 1997, an Award of Excellence from the American Library Association, and an SDG&E “Savings Through Design” commendation for energy efficiency. It was featured on the cover of the December 1997 issue of Architectural Record.
