Within this Georgian mansion block lived a three bed flat that was
entered through a twisting stairway. The design for the flat hinged on an entry
way that opened wide before the visitor and cut open the separation between
entry and living areas. The twisting of the walls gave certain definition to
the living area, the entry and the kitchen and allowed for a simple redefinition
of the family’s living space.
The twists of the handrail
were followed diligently up through the stairwell with the use of a
continuously rising solid balustrade. Stairs became an occupiable piece of
furniture within the living area, and the kitchen is cut open to the family
area to enjoy.
