HED was commissioned to design a new elementary school for Los Angeles Unified School District. The “L” shaped school consists of a two story classroom block with all spaces ideally oriented to the North and South and a one story support wing including library, administration, multi-purpose room and kitchen. The school is sited on the corner of the existing Sepulveda Middle school campus in the San Fernando Valley and required reconfiguration of the existing school playgrounds.
The main entrance is located at the intersection of the classroom block and the support wing at the Southwest corner of the site. The location maximizes the queuing distance for passenger drop off. The two corners of the “L” embrace a single rectangular play yard consisting of landscape, a kindergarten playground and a multipurpose turf field and track. Open arcades line the administration and multipurpose wing to provide a lunch and outdoor learning area sheltered from the Western sun.
