Carliol Central achieves Design Excellence
Carliol Central Offices in central Newcastle has been acknowledged for achieving Design Excellence by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in their latest client handbook.
Designed by Chris Fairley of Newcastle based firm Intersect Architects Ltd, and completed in 2009, the brief was for a standalone building immediately adjacent to the central motorway in Newcastle, providing 6000ft2 of office accommodation over 3 floors. The building’s proximity to the retaining wall of the motorway impacted on the design, construction methods and specification of materials. The retaining wall had to be accessible at all times both during construction and on completion, and this dictated the use of insulated cladding panels at the lower levels that can be accessed internally should they ever need replacing.
The cantilevered point of the stair enclosure and the horizontal bull nose glazing bars emphasize the dynamic form of the building viewed from the motorway, with more defined window openings to the entrance facade. Brise soleil are incorporated at third floor level and antisun glass throughout to control solar glare internally.
Commenting on the recognition, Andrew Scott, Managing Director of Intersect Architects Ltd said:
“We are delighted that the design has been acknowledged by the RIBA as an example of Design Excellence as we aim to apply this criteria to all our commissions.”
