The project entails replacing the existing critical access Carlinville Area Hospital with a new freestanding critical access replacement hospital. Originally planned to be based on a prototype concept of an existing critical access hospital previously designed by BSA LifeStructures, it was determined in the project definition stage that the new critical access hospital would create a bold new identity for their Illinois community.
Despite the decision to not use a critical access prototype design, many departmental adjacencies are being maintained to emphasize operational efficiency that is significantly important in community-based hospitals. The new hospital is approximately 55,000 gross square feet including an outbuilding used for maintenance, record storage, general storage and yard storage materials.
The new hospital contains the following services and departments: Emergency, Imaging, Surgery (both inpatient and outpatient), Outpatient Clinics, 15 bed Inpatient Nursing unit, Dietary, Administration, Lab, Inpatient and Outpatient PT/OT, Cardiac rehab and Pulmonary therapy, Environmental Services and Maintenance. Future growth of six beds was planned into the design.
Public spaces such as chapel, gift shop and cafeteria space is arranged around a large welcoming lobby which is the main patient entry.
