This International competition invited participants to produce design concept of a community center for lung cancer patients in Krakow, Poland. It involved the design of a 330 m2 building, located in one of the city's public parks of 4.600 m2 surface. The park is neighboring the Institute of Oncology Maria Sklodowska and the Post-treatment Rehabilitation Center.
Our concept design proposal was centered on human, both patients and their relatives, while it emphasized the importance human interaction and bonding has in the case of chronically ill patients.
The Care Center, directly referencing to the human cell and its main components, the nucleus and the membrane, is positioned in a more private part of the park. The nucleus, the building's heart, comprises the dining area and the kitchen, while all other facilities lay around it, without the use of separations. The exterior space is surrounded by a wooden veil, offering privacy and although the building can be characterized as introvert, its placement in the park, offers the patients the option to blend with other visitors or not.
The three buildings are connected by the characteristic red ribbon, which acts simultaneously as the pathway border and the main seating area.
