Care Center De Meern, Abrona – MONK architects
A private place for multiple disabled young people with 24-hour care.
In the area of De Meern – Veldhuizen (part of Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht) we find a number of old farms. The agricultural destination of these farms is very often moved or simply just disappeared due to the arrival of the new district Leidsche Rijn. In some places in this district however farm and yard have been saved from demolition and often have been given a new destination. One of this monumental farms is situated at the edge of Veldhuizen along the remains of a Roman road. This farm has been converted into a restaurant for residential care centre Abrona. In BraZZerie Abrona people with intellectual disabilities are employed in the kitchen, household and the control. By working here they can achieve a degree in the hotel and catering industry and have a chance at a paid job in the future.Out of this situation the demand grew for suited housing for these employees of the BraZZerie. First, a new coach house was built, but this soon appeared too small. Therefore the adjacent part of the land was purchased for the construction of a larger care centre and thus the original farmyard was again complete. The first building proposals however caused a lot of resistance.MONK architects was asked to create a new proposal. The current plan is placed parallel to the farm – in its length so that the farm is visible both from the district as from the Roman road. The South and East facade mark the borders of the old farmyard. In addition to the original farmhouse, in which braZZerie Abrona is situated, MONK designed a modern barn. This barn locates the care home as well as a care centre and rental housing with destination assisted living for (disabled) young people who, among other things, work in the braZZerie.A special building that is both controversial as striking. In particular by the refined detailing and the consistent use of materials. This is seen in the design of place and rhythm of the nails that secure the vertical wood. Precisely the use of a material and color is what makes this building into a striking moment in a new setting.During the construction process, there were various functional changes. The design proved to be so flexible that changes could easily be made.
A monolithic game of material and detail.
