CVA’s doctors came to GA Studio with a desire to consolidate three
locations – two clinics and a business office- into a single locale, built for
efficiency now and growth later. The
client believed this meant 15% more SF than the sum of their three parts. With the doctors’ help, GA Studio spent
months analyzing CVA’s weekly routines and educating the group on the
application of lean principles for daily operational flow. Using the modified exam flow, GA Studio was
able to deliver an architectural design for greater patient throughput in 30%
less clinical space than before; 45% less space than expected from the onset.
The main floor of the resulting building is at Level 2, where the exam
suite and diagnostic suite flank a central landscaped courtyard, joined at
either end by a large shared waiting area and a minimal glass bridge. Both suites are organized into color-coded
clusters of rooms - at the Diagnostic side, the clusters are organized by
service; at the Exam side, by doctor on the floor that day. Color-coding and day-lit views keep patients
and staff oriented and self-directed through clear circulation paths and
repeated visual cues. Shorter travel
distances save time for staff and patients, allowing for increased
doctor-patient face time.
The repetition and organization also allowed patient rooms to be
constructed off-site in modular units.
This was not by accident, as GA Studio had been studying and advancing
methods of modular construction through the development of a sister company,
BLOX. Through selective bidding, the
building contract was awarded to Brasfield & Gorrie, who hired BLOX to
produce 24 exam rooms. BLOX delivered
the 24 rooms in 12 units and set them in place within the building shell over 6
days.
