Design Haus Liberty in collaboration with ALEKSAstudio have recently completed the refurbishment of the Principality Stadium entrance in the heart of Cardiff. With a footfall of nearly 85,000 people per year the refurbishment required a minimalistic palette juxtaposed with a wow-factor feature installation to capture the passers-by and draw them into the building. New concrete-effect flooring, bespoke brass and walnut seating complement a space for mobile pop-up stands where young entrepreneurs can share their ground-breaking food concepts and local artists can display temporary exhibitions.
The welcoming atmosphere creates a ‘buzz’ within the entrance which is amplified by The Simorg - a bespoke fibre-optic installation that falls effortlessly through the triple-height atrium and is composed of over 1500 bespoke-moulded brass components. Designed through parametric modeling and engaging with the sub-structure of the existing building, the installation is suspended from a pre-fabricated, water-jet cut halo clad with mirror finish steel plates creating an optical illusion as if the suspended components continue their flight to infinity.
Assembling the 3.7m x 6.5m light feature took nearly two weeks and required a bespoke vertical scaffolding structure to be erected in the atrium. The process began with 3D points being templated in-situ to finalise exact location of the feature in the space. 290 cable lengths and the locations of 6 components per cable were then extracted from the 3D model and used on site by the installers to achieve an accurate assembly. As each component was individually hand-placed on 2870m of fibre-optic cable, the installation took form to become a recognisable icon in the city. It is set against a double height wall painted in deep blue and it changes its appearance throughout the day and night.
To complement the main refurbishment, the design team also took part in a larger re-branding strategy for the building. Proposals included a new wayfinding signage in brushed brass, bespoke graphic icons and a selection of colours borrowed from the materials used in the interiors – brown, mid-grey, gold and dark blue. Bespoke fixed seating looking out to the plaza features playful slender gold steel frames with walnut finish timber tops - these change levels to create seating and countertop areas within one continuous system. This linear language is taken through to the bespoke brass signage and display rails on the feature timber slatted wall and in the choice of underlined wayfinding font throughout. Two mobile pop-up stands comprising gold metal frames and walnut timber bases echo the details visible in the feature wall and the seating and are designed to be used by young local entrepreneurs. A large pink neon sign saying ‘I love you’ in Welsh, handwritten by the client, is a powerful statement piece one sees when ascending the escalators.
Together, the refurbishment blends well-thought out design and branding to create a harmonious environment that is timeless and captures the Simorg – a benevolent, mythical bird in Persian mythology and often associated with the Phoenix.
