The Capstar at Plaza project began as the final phase of a Planned Unit Development that began in 1984 on the edge of downtown Austin. As the design progressed, the project evolved from a simple shell office building into a sustainable and environmentally conscience building that provides a healthy environment for its occupants and community. Serving as a prominent gateway icon into downtown Austin, STG Design designed this four-story, 123,000 square foot office space to maximize density and develop a sense of campus. Facing north, the glass façade, anchored by a strong masonry element, runs along Fifth Street and conveys a sense of movement as passersby enter the Central Business District. The masonry creates a natural richness of materials in contrast to the glass while providing acoustic privacy from the adjacent railway. Cast in place concrete balconies project from the east and west ends of the masonry element creating deep shadows and rhythm visible from MoPac Expressway. The building features a generously landscaped courtyard, fountain and access to Lady Bird Lake. The project was LEED pre-certified and was awarded a LEED rating of Gold.
