A building designed to grow - like a
living organism – through time, to address the city’s changing needs by
providing an adaptable urban framework for its inhabitants. It will be a continuous “energy gathering”
machine, not simply an “energy sink” into which electricity is dumped from
pollution generating sources.It will
use high density private and public spaces to offer higher quality environments
to a socio-economically diverse community.
The site is oriented to the north for retail; however a massive courtyard
is oriented to Cadiz Street, providing a water feature that is an amenity to
the education, wellness center, and commercial space, and also opens the area
to the public. The building will have
dedicated services to the homeless, offering facility jobs and shelter to the neighboring
community. The following technologies were employed for this project:
Electric wind turbines with linear
helical bladesMulti-junction thin-film photovoltaic cell
sheetsTwo stage mesophilic continuous
anaerobic digestion system for waste water treatmentUse of rehabilitated shipping containers
for residential unitsMultilevel automated parking systemModular trellising system supporting
vegetation growth
