The building has been designed to a BREEAM ?excellent? rating to
provide a high quality headquarters facility of approximately 50,000sqft gross
to consolidate the end user?s operations in the Midlands.
The site, being on a raised plateau, benefits from significant views
from the M6 Toll road upon a raised plateau. The design was developed to take
advantage of this, creating a readily identifiable building form which will
become a local landmark. On the immediate approach to the building, the visitor
is elevated and is afforded a clear view of the active glazed elevation, framed
by the angled metal cladding. As you move into the site, the building core
reveals itself, with the entrance welcoming you as the heart between the open
and flexible accommodation wings.
Rising folded rectangular planes form a clear, strong line over the
wings, which contrast with the lightweight glazed fades. The line of the
glazing responds to the diagonal structure creating layers which interplay and
connect. The two distinctive shapes of the accommodation are balanced by the
core at the heart of the building. This is the active area, where freeflow of
movement takes place between all users and visitors. This is a light, airy
space both vertically and horizontally that welcomes and entices the user.
Directly linked from this is the canteen which also can break out onto the external
amenity space. The three building elements wrap around this space to provide a
sense of enclosure and security. The building heights, at three storeys, allow
sunlight to penetrate the internal spaces creating a stimulating and enjoyable
internal environment for all that use the space and the buildings - employees,
employers and visitors alike.
Although the appearance of this building is
complex, the structural solution is simple and efficient. The exposed raking steel frame
provides both vertical and lateral restraint. The use of cellform beams to support the floors enables an
intergarted service/structural solution to be developed, leading to a reduction
in the floor depths and a column free internal space.
