The new Campus Derendorf will be tailor-made. Approximately 6500 students, 250 faculty members will be the cast for the new campus gathering all seven departements of the academy which as an institution understands its role of education on the basis of interdisciplinary, international, scientific, and design oriented development. Currently the seven departments are distributed on various spots in Dusseldorf.CONCEPTHow do the students and the faculty members move in the campus? Who do they meet in the corridors of their faculties – be it accidently or on intention? Do they cross other departements, faculties, their ways, or pass an exhibition, possibly the end of the year exhibition of the designers displaying their latest poster results from a typography seminar for example ligning a 'Main Boulevard' in the new campus site?Imagine a campus giving this opportunity of crossing disciplines, paths strengthening the exchange between faculties, students, visitors and the neighbours living close-by simply by offering an easy accessible arrangement.CAMPUSThe complex spatial programme requires a diagrammatic approach to differ common generic areas such as classroom, lecture halls and exhibition spaces from the faculty's specific seminar and office areas. It is a two-storey base with open spaces, large courtyards, and grand voids allowing vista from all over.Accessed from this two-storey base each faculty grows into single towers according their spatial need and serving as a particular address or face to each faculty. Each faculty is housed in one tower. While the generic two-storey base shapes a rather 'extensive scape' of Campus Derendorf, the towers form 'intensive cores' for each faculty.URBAN CONTEXTThe chosen site in Derendorf – the abandoned 'Schlosser Brewery' of approximately 50.000 squaremeters – in the middle of an urban neighbourhood offers enough space for all departements releasing the above mentioned exchange. Campus Derendorf becomes part of a neighbourhood comlementing the structure with its volumes. The entire site is divided into two parts by a centrally located public parc which is going to be implemented by the city as part of a masterplan following the idea of a green belt. The 'Faculty Scape' with its seven towers is located in the West of the central parc whereas two major attractors address not only the faculty's life but also public events in the East.It is an existing abandoned slaughtery which is going to be renovated and re-used as the library and the canteen and a new building offering meeting rooms, lecture halls, video conference rooms etc in the fashion of a modern convention center also rentable for external events and conferences.LANDSCAPECampus Derendorf overlaps with the public green belt projecting the inner world of the faculties as well as the outer world of the public into the Academy. The different actors of the city, the neighbourhood and the academy share a new form of campus as an academic plaza. The atmosphere of a dense parc is kept by distributing pieces of green patches into the plaza. The inner organization of the 'Faculty Scape', the two-storey base follows an extension of the city. A translations of urban motives such as boulevards, streets, courtyards and houses are transferred into the academy. The new campus becomes a part of the urban fabric in constant exchange with its players and the city.
