This is a house for an empty nest couple, who where looking to downsize from their previous Lloyd Wright home, to a location closer to family, and have an abiding interest in the trajectory of Los Angeles modernist architecture.
The house contrasts sharply with the more traditional style of the neighborhood, but reflects the spirit of innovation and progress that infuses the Altadena/Pasadena area with its long standing tradition of innovate architecture, science and technology. Art Center College of Design's Craig Ellwood main building, Cal Tech, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, the Mt Wilson Telescope are just a few of the historical traditions that have inspired this house. It also fits snuggly in the Los Angeles traditions of modernist housing, embracing both the car culture and the temperate climate of this region with open courtyards at each end and the integrated carport that forms the main architectural element of the design.
